AG Herring highlights National Drug Take-Back Day events to dispose of unused prescriptions, especially opiates, at one of hundreds of drop-off sites
RICHMOND, Va. (September 21, 2015) – Attorney General Mark R. Herring is encouraging Virginians to take advantage of Saturday’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a partnership between the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and law enforcement partners across the nation, including many in Virginia. Prescription opiate abuse is a widely acknowledged gateway to opiate addiction, and can lead addicts to cheaper, more accessible, and more potent heroin and other street drugs. Last year, Attorney General Herring announced a five point plan to combat heroin and prescription opiate abuse in Virginia by creating and implementing partnerships and creative solutions for a complex problem.
“Drug Take-Back Days are essential to safely discard drugs, but also to elevate the conversation about prescription drug abuse that’s affecting Virginians throughout the Commonwealth,” said Attorney General Mark Herring. “Prescription drug abuse often starts in the home which is why it’s essential to handle these medications responsibly, make sure they are used as prescribed, and keep them out of the hands of people who might seek to abuse them. This partnership is a robust example of how state, local and federal law enforcement partners can work together to make a difference on this issue. I encourage all Virginians to take advantage of Drug Take-Back locations and take a moment to reflect upon how we can help combat prescription drug abuse in the Commonwealth.”
In 2013, more than 420 Virginians died of misuse or overdose of opiates like hydrocodone, oxycodone, or methadone. National research shows that 6.5 million people abused prescription drugs in 2013, the majority of whom got their drugs from friends or family members, including the home medicine cabinet.
